といった introduces examples of a category: 京都や奈良といった古い町が好きだ, "I like old towns such as Kyoto and Nara".

The examples usually come in a list with や or と, and the category follows: 日本料理, スポーツ, 高い買い物. It's like などの, but a little more formal and descriptive.

With a negative, これといった means "nothing in particular": これといった趣味はない, "I don't have any hobby in particular".

Compare という ("called"), which names one specific thing, and をはじめ, which leads a list with its most important member. といった implies the list could go on.

  • すしや天てんぷらといった日本料理にほんりょうりは人気にんきがある。
