など

and so on, things like

など after a noun or a list means "and so on" or "things like": 京都や奈良などに行きました, "I went to places like Kyoto and Nara".

It usually closes a や list, but it can follow a single noun to soften a suggestion: お茶などいかがですか, "how about some tea or something?"

Particles attach after it as normal: などに, などを, などが.

In casual speech, なんか and とか do the same job: ゲームとか, "games and stuff". Both are accepted as near misses here, since this point practises など.

Register: なんか and とか are the casual equivalents.

Examples

  • 京都きょうとや奈良ならなどに行いきました。

    I went to places like Kyoto and Nara.

  • スーパーで肉にくや野菜やさいなどを買かいました。

    I bought meat, vegetables and so on at the supermarket.

  • かばんの中なかに財布さいふやかぎなどが入はいっています。

    My bag has my wallet, keys and so on in it.

  • お茶ちゃなどいかがですか。

    How about some tea or something?

  • 週末しゅうまつは掃除そうじや洗濯せんたくなどをします。

    At weekends I do the cleaning, laundry and so on.
