〜より〜のほうが

A is more … than B

B より A のほうが + adjective

To make the winner of a comparison clear, mark it with のほうが: 犬より猫のほうが好きです, "I like cats more than dogs". ほう (方) means "side", so this is "the cat side is liked".

It's the natural answer to a どちら question: 夏と冬と、どちらが好きですか。 —— 冬のほうが好きです.

After a verb, drop the の: 書くより話すほうが簡単です, "speaking is easier than writing".

ほう is often written in kanji, 方; both spellings are accepted here. The same ほう appears in ほうがいい (advice), from a few points back: it's the "side" that's better.

  • 犬いぬより猫ねこのほうが好すきです。

    I like cats more than dogs.

  • バスより電車でんしゃのほうが速はやいです。

    The train is faster than the bus.

  • 夏なつより冬ふゆのほうが好すきです。

    I prefer winter to summer.

  • 東京とうきょうより京都きょうとのほうが静しずかです。

    Kyoto is quieter than Tokyo.

  • 書かくより話はなすほうが簡単かんたんです。

    Speaking is easier than writing.
