一番 (いちばん), literally "number one", makes a superlative: 富士山は日本で一番高い山です, "Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan".
The group being compared is marked with で or の中で: クラスで一番, "(the most) in the class"; 果物の中で一番, "of all fruit".
To ask which is the most, use a question word with が: 何が一番好きですか, "what do you like best?"; どれが一番安いですか, "which is the cheapest?"
Before a noun it works like any adverb: 一番好きな食べ物, "my favourite food".
一番 also keeps its literal meaning, "number one": 一番になる is "come first", and 一番電車 is the first train of the day.
