より

than

A は B より + adjective

より marks what something is being compared against: 東京は大阪より大きいです, "Tokyo is bigger than Osaka". It goes after B, the thing being beaten.

Japanese adjectives have no "-er" form. 大きい means "big" or "bigger" depending on whether there's a comparison in the sentence, so より carries all the work.

It works after verbs too: 思ったより簡単でした, "it was easier than I thought".

Word order is flexible (大阪より東京は大きい is fine), because より, not position, shows what's compared to what. The next point adds のほうが, to mark the winner as well.

Examples

  • 東京とうきょうは大阪おおさかより大おおきいです。

    Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.

  • 今日きょうは昨日きのうより暑あついですね。

    Today's hotter than yesterday, isn't it?

  • 私わたしは兄あにより背せが高たかいです。

    I'm taller than my older brother.

  • バスは電車でんしゃより安やすいです。

    The bus is cheaper than the train.

  • テストは思おもったより簡単かんたんでした。

    The test was easier than I thought.
