何か・誰か・どこか

Add か to a question word and it becomes an indefinite "some-" word:

  • 何か (なにか): something
  • 誰か: someone
  • どこか: somewhere
  • いつか: someday

何か飲みますか is "would you like something to drink?", a yes/no question, where 何を飲みますか is "what will you drink?", asking for the drink itself.

が and を usually drop after these words (何か食べる, not 何かを食べる, though both occur); other particles stay: どこかへ行く, 誰かに聞く.

The answer to a 何か question is はい or いいえ first, then the detail: はい、お茶をお願いします.

Examples

  • 何なにか飲のみますか。

    Would you like something to drink?

  • 誰だれか来きましたか。

    Did someone come?

  • 週末しゅうまつ、どこかへ行いきましたか。

    Did you go anywhere at the weekend?

  • いつか日本にほんに住すみたいです。

    I'd like to live in Japan someday.

  • 冷蔵庫れいぞうこに何なにかありますか。

    Is there anything in the fridge?
