〜ます is the polite ending for verbs, and the first verb form most learners meet: 食べます, "(I) eat" or "(I) will eat".

Japanese has no separate future tense, so the same form covers habits and plans: 毎日コーヒーを飲みます, "I drink coffee every day"; 明日行きます, "I'll go tomorrow".

To make it, take the verb's ます-stem:

  • ichidan verbs drop る: 食べる → 食べます
  • godan verbs move their last kana to the i-row: 飲む → 飲みます, 帰る → 帰ります
  • the irregulars: する → します, 来る → 来ます (きます)

Register: Polite: use it wherever you'd use です.

Examples

  • 毎朝まいあさコーヒーを飲のみます。

    I drink coffee every morning.

  • 私わたしは毎日七時まいにちしちじに起おきます。

    I get up at seven every day.

  • 明日あした、友達ともだちが来きます。

    A friend is coming tomorrow.

  • 週末しゅうまつは家いえで勉強べんきょうします。

    I study at home at weekends.

  • 今日きょうは早はやく帰かえります。

    I'm going home early today.

  • 夜よるは日本にほんの本ほんを読よみます。

    In the evenings I read Japanese books.
