ました is the polite past: 食べました, "(I) ate". Just replace ます with ました; the stem doesn't change.
Japanese past covers both "I ate" and "I have eaten", so 宿題をしました can be "I did my homework" or "I've done my homework", depending on context.
Time words like 昨日 (yesterday), 先週 (last week) and さっき (a moment ago) are good signs that a sentence wants ました.
The casual past, the た-form (食べた), comes later in the deck. It takes more work to build, which is why the polite past comes first.

I watched a film yesterday.
先週、京都に行きました。
I went to Kyoto last week.
宿題はもうしました。
I've already done my homework.
昨日の夜、母に電話をかけました。
I called my mother last night.
駅で田中さんに会いました。
