〜ほど〜ない

ほど with a negative says something doesn't reach a level: 今年の夏は去年ほど暑くない, "this summer isn't as hot as last year". A is compared with B and falls short.

What comes after ほど must be negative. For positive comparisons, use より: 去年より暑い, "hotter than last year".

It works with verbs too: 思ったほど難しくなかった, "it wasn't as hard as I thought", a very common phrase with 思った.

A related pattern, 〜ほど〜はない, means "there's nothing as … as": 家ほど落ち着く所はない, "nowhere is as relaxing as home". It's a strong way to say something is the best.

  • 今年ことしの夏なつは去年きょねんほど暑あつくない。

    This summer isn't as hot as last year.

  • テストは思おもったほど難むずかしくなかった。

    The test wasn't as hard as I thought.

  • 私わたしの町まちは東京とうきょうほど大おおきくありません。

    My town isn't as big as Tokyo.

  • 兄あには父ちちほど背せが高たかくない。

    My older brother isn't as tall as my father.

  • 今日きょうは昨日きのうほど寒さむくないですね。

    Today isn't as cold as yesterday, is it?

  • 家いえほど落おち着つく所ところはない。

    Nowhere is as relaxing as home.
