Japanese treats feelings as private: you can say 私は怖い, "I'm scared", but not flatly that someone else is. For other people, add がる to the adjective, "show signs of": 子どもが注射を怖がった, "the child was scared of the injection".

  • い-adjectives: drop い: 怖い → 怖がる, 暑い → 暑がる
  • たい → たがる: 妹は日本に行きたがっています, "my sister wants to go to Japan"
  • ほしい → ほしがる: 弟は新しいゲームをほしがっている

がる verbs are godan and usually appear as がっている. The thing felt about takes を, not が.
