〜に対して

に対して points an action or attitude at someone or something: 先生に対して失礼なことを言ってはいけない, "you mustn't be rude to your teacher". It's common with feelings, responses and opposition: 質問に対して答える, 法律に対して反対する.

Before a noun, it becomes に対する: 環境問題に対する関心, "interest in environmental issues".

After a plain form plus の, it makes a contrast: 兄は背が高いのに対して、弟は低い, "my older brother is tall, whereas my younger brother is short". This use is formal and common in writing.

Don't confuse it with にとって: 私にとって is "from my point of view", while 私に対して is "towards me".

Examples

  • 先生せんせいに対たいして、失礼しつれいなことを言いってはいけない。

    You mustn't say rude things to your teacher.

  • 質問しつもんに対たいして、はっきり答こたえてください。

    Please give a clear answer to the question.

  • 兄あには背せが高たかいのに対たいして、弟おとうとは低ひくい。

    My older brother is tall, whereas my younger brother is short.

  • 環境問題かんきょうもんだいに対たいする関心かんしんが高たかまっている。

    Interest in environmental issues is growing.

  • 新あたらしい法律ほうりつに対たいして反対はんたいする人ひとが多おおい。

    Many people are opposed to the new law.
