〜にしたがって

にしたがって comes from 従う, "to follow, obey", and has two uses.

After a noun for rules, instructions or guides, it means "following, in accordance with": 先生の指示にしたがって実験を進めた, "we carried out the experiment according to the teacher's instructions". ルールにしたがって, 地図にしたがって.

After a verb of change, it means "as": 町が大きくなるにしたがって、交通も便利になった, "as the town grew, transport improved too". Here it overlaps with につれて, but sounds a bit more formal and written.

It's often written in kanji as に従って. The formal short form is に従い.

  • 先生せんせいの指示しじにしたがって、実験じっけんを進すすめた。

    We carried out the experiment according to the teacher's instructions.

  • 地図ちずにしたがって歩あるいていくと、駅えきに着ついた。

    Following the map, I reached the station.

  • ルールにしたがって、ゴミを出だしてください。

    Please put out your rubbish according to the rules.

  • 高たかく登のぼるにしたがって、景色けしきがよくなる。

    The higher you climb, the better the view.

  • 町まちが大おおきくなるにしたがって、交通こうつうも便利べんりになった。

    As the town grew, transport also became more convenient.
