〜をもとに(して)

based on, using as material

をもとに means using something as the source or material for making something new: この小説は作者の体験をもとに書かれた, "this novel was written based on the author's own experiences".

The second half is usually a creative or productive verb: 書く, 作る, 描く, 開発する. The new thing may differ quite a bit from its source.

Before a noun, it becomes をもとにした: 昔話をもとにした映画, "a film based on a folk tale". The して in をもとにして is optional.

Compare に基づいて, which is about staying faithful to rules or evidence. をもとに is about building from raw material. It's often written with kanji: を元に.

    I wrote the report based on the information I'd gathered.
