〜はともかく

setting aside, regardless of

はともかく sets one issue aside to focus on something more important: 見た目はともかく、味はいい, "never mind how it looks, it tastes good".

The first item isn't denied, just put on hold: it may matter, but it's not the point right now. 結果はともかく、最後まで頑張ったことが大切だ, "whatever the result, what matters is that you tried your best".

It's also a common way to change the subject: 冗談はともかく、本題に入りましょう, "joking aside, let's get down to business".

はさておき means the same and is a little more formal. Compare はもちろん, which takes the first item for granted rather than setting it aside.

Examples

  • 見みた目めはともかく、味あじはいい。

    It may not look much, but it tastes good.

  • 結果けっかはともかく、最後さいごまで頑張がんばったことが大切たいせつだ。

    Whatever the result, what matters is that you tried your best to the end.

  • 値段ねだんはともかく、品質ひんしつが一番大事いちばんだいじだ。

    Price aside, quality is what matters most.

  • 冗談じょうだんはともかく、本題ほんだいに入はいりましょう。

    Joking aside, let's get down to business.

  • 他ほかの人ひとはともかく、私わたしは反対はんたいです。
