〜をもって

by means of, with; as of (formal)

をもって has two formal uses:

  • Means: "by means of, with". 結果は書面をもってお知らせします, "we'll notify you of the results in writing". 誠意をもって, "with sincerity".
  • Time limit: "as of, at", marking an official start or end. 本日をもって受付を終了いたします, "applications close as of today". 以上をもって、本日の会議を終わります, "with that, today's meeting is closed".

Both are stiff and official, found in announcements, letters, ceremonies and business documents. In ordinary speech, the means use becomes で, and the time use becomes で or までで.

It comes from 持つ, "to hold", so it's literally "holding X".

Examples

  • 本日ほんじつをもって、受付うけつけを終了しゅうりょういたします。

    Applications close as of today.

  • 結果けっかは書面しょめんをもってお知しらせします。

    We'll notify you of the results in writing.

  • 彼かれは誠意せいいをもって謝罪しゃざいした。

    He apologised with sincerity.

  • 以上いじょうをもって、本日ほんじつの会議かいぎを終おわります。

    With that, today's meeting is closed.

  • 三月末日さんがつまつじつをもって退職たいしょくいたします。

    I will retire as of the end of March.
