Sentence-ending particles: ね, よ, な, ぞ, ぜ, さ, わ and more

The tiny sounds at the end of Japanese sentences, grouped by what they do: seeking agreement, giving information, emphasising, softening, musing. How to hear them, and what they tell you about the speaker.

About 6 minutes to read

Sentence-ending particles are the intonation of Japanese. They tell you the speaker's attitude: sure or unsure, gentle or forceful, asking for agreement or telling you news.

Agreement and information: ね, よ, よね

ParticleCore ideaExample
ねyou know this too; checkingいい天気ですね。
よhere's something you may not knowもう行くよ。
よねI think so, right?明日休みだよね?
いい 天気てんきweatherです ねisn't it
Nice weather, isn't it?
約束やくそくpromiseは 守まもるkeepよI tell you
I'll keep my promise, I tell you.
田中たなかTanakaさん は 来くるcomeよねright
Tanaka is coming, right?

ね comes when both parties already know, or when the speaker seeks to share. よ comes when the speaker is giving news or pushing a point. Switching them changes the whole feel.

Self-talk and musing: な, なあ, かな

な / なあ is a sigh, a wish, or soft thinking aloud:

いい 天気てんきweatherだなisn't it
行いきgoたいなあI want to
Nice weather... / I want to go...

かな / かしら is "I wonder":

明日あしたtomorrow晴はれるclearかなI wonder
I wonder if it'll be sunny tomorrow.
彼かれheは 来くるcomeかしらI wonder
I wonder if he'll come. (feminine/old-fashioned)

Emphasis: ぞ, ぜ, さ, わ

ParticleFeel
ぞstrong, masculine: warning or declaration
ぜmasculine: "let's", confident
さcasual: matter of fact, "obviously"
わsoft, feminine (or Kansai): emphasis
のsoft explanation (see the lesson on の)
行いくgoぞI tell you
I'm going!
行いこうlet's goぜman
Let's go!
そんな の 当あたり前まえobviousさobviously
That's obvious, of course.
私わたしIも 行いくgoわ(emphasis)
I'm going too. (feminine/refined)

Questions: か, の, かい, だい

ParticleFeel
かneutral question; polite when after です/ます
のcasual question (rising); soft explanation (falling)
かいmale, friendly: "…?"
だいmale, friendly with a question word: "…?"
元気げんきwellかい(friendly question)
How are you? (older male)
何なにwhatを しているare doingんだ(explaining)い(friendly)
What're you doing?

Pouting and reasons: もん, ってば

ParticleFeel
もんpouty reason: "but..."
ってばimpatient: "I told you!"
じゃんcasual: "isn't it obvious"
だって 嫌いやunwillingだもんbecause
But I don't want to!
聞きこえてるhearingってばI said
I said I can hear you!
いい じゃんisn't it
It's fine, isn't it?

Hearsay and quotes: って, とさ, そうだ

彼かれheは 来こないdoesn't comeってthey say
He's not coming, apparently.

Why they matter

The same sentence ends differently:

SentenceFeel
行く。I'm going. (flat)
行くよ。I'm going (news for you).
行くね。I'm going (sharing, gentle).
行くぞ。I'm going! (determined, male)
行くわ。I'm going. (feminine, soft)
行くかな。I wonder if I'll go.

In an anime, the ending is often the only clue about who is speaking and how they feel. Hear them as intonation.

Stacking

Particles can stack: 行くよね, 行くのよ, 行くんだよ, 行くんだよね. Each adds one layer, left to right.

行いくgoんだ(explaining)よ(telling)ね(sharing)
I'm going, you know, right?

Longer sentences

Endings colour a dialogue. Read these lines in different tones and notice how the same content changes.

明日あしたtomorrowは(topic)休やすみday offだよねright? じゃあthen映画えいがmovieでもor something見みにto see行いこうlet's goよ
行いきたいwant to goけどbut明日あしたはtomorrowちょっとa bit用事ようじがerrandあるんだhave, you seeごめんねsorry
そっかoh I see、 残念ざんねんa pityだなあahじゃあthen来週らいしゅうnext weekにしようぜlet's make it
Tomorrow's a day off, right? Then let's go see a movie or something. I'd like to, but I've got something I have to do tomorrow. Sorry. Oh, I see. What a pity. Then let's do next week.

A tense exchange

本当ほんとうにreally行いくgoの(asking)? 危あぶないってdangerous (quote)言いったsaidでしょdidn't I?
大丈夫だいじょうぶだってit's fine, I said心配しんぱいしすぎだよyou worry too much
もうalready知しらないI don't careからsoね(softener)後あとでlater泣ないてもeven if you cry助たすけないわよI won't help
はいはいyeah yeah、 分わかったよgot it行いってくるI'll go and come backぜ(emphasis)
Are you really going? I told you it's dangerous, didn't I? It's fine, I said. You worry too much. I'm done with you, okay? Even if you cry later, I won't help. Yeah, yeah, got it. I'm off, then.

Key points

  • ね shares; よ tells; よね confirms.
  • な, かな, かしら muse.
  • ぞ, ぜ, さ, わ colour the speaker.
  • もん, ってば, じゃん are casual emotion.
  • Particles stack. Hear them as tone of voice.
