と (with)

with (a person)

After a person, と means "with": 友達と映画を見ました, "I watched a film with a friend". It's the same と that joins nouns, doing a neighbouring job.

Some verbs need a partner by nature and take と for them: 結婚する (marry), 話す (talk), けんかする (argue). 田中さんと話しました is "I talked with Mr Tanaka".

Add 一緒に for "together": 家族と一緒に住んでいます, "I live with my family".

For the thing you do something with, a tool or a means, it's で, not と: 箸で食べる. People take と; things take で.

  • 友達ともだちと映画えいがを見みました。

    I watched a film with a friend.

  • 週末しゅうまつは家族かぞくと出でかけます。

    At weekends I go out with my family.

  • 先生せんせいと話はなしました。

    I talked with my teacher.

  • 姉あねは来月らいげつ、アメリカ人じんと結婚けっこんします。

    My sister is marrying an American next month.

  • 母ははと一緒いっしょに料理りょうりを作つくりました。

    I cooked with my mother.
