と joins nouns: 犬と猫, "dogs and cats". It gives a complete list, "A and B" and nothing else. For "A, B and so on", Japanese uses や instead.

と only joins nouns. It never links verbs, adjectives or whole sentences: for "I ate and slept", Japanese changes the verb's form instead (the て-form, later in this deck).

With more than two items, と goes between each: パンとたまごと牛乳, "bread, eggs and milk".

The same と after a person means "with" (友達と行きます, "I'm going with a friend"), a separate point further on.

Examples

  • パンとたまごを買かいました。

    I bought bread and eggs.

  • 私わたしと妹いもうとは学生がくせいです。

    My little sister and I are students.

  • 月曜日げつようびと木曜日もくようびは忙いそがしいです。

    I'm busy on Mondays and Thursdays.

  • 東京とうきょうと大阪おおさかに行いきました。

    I went to Tokyo and Osaka.

  • 机つくえの上うえに本ほんとペンがあります。

    There's a book and a pen on the desk.
