The plain past negative: take the ない form and change ない to なかった, exactly as an い-adjective does. 食べない → 食べなかった, "(I) didn't eat"; 行かない → 行かなかった, "(I) didn't go".

It's the casual equivalent of ませんでした.

The usual trap is 食べないだった or 食べないでした. ない never takes だ or でした; its past is built into it.

Politely, add です: 食べなかったです, which is common in conversation and means the same as 食べませんでした.

Irregulars follow their ない forms: しなかった, 来なかった (こなかった). And ある, whose negative is just ない, becomes なかった: 時間がなかった, "there wasn't time".

Examples

  • 昨日きのうは何なにも食たべなかった。

    I didn't eat anything yesterday.

  • パーティーには行いかなかった。

    I didn't go to the party.

  • 田中たなかさん、来こなかったね。

    Tanaka didn't come, did he?

  • 昨日きのうは雨あめが降ふらなかった。

    It didn't rain yesterday.

  • ごめん、宿題しゅくだいをしなかった。

    Sorry, I didn't do my homework.
