くれる
give (to me, or my side)

くれる is giving towards you: 友達がケーキをくれました, "a friend gave me a cake". The giver is the subject, and the receiver (you) is usually left out, since くれる already says who it is.
"Your side" includes your family and anyone you're speaking for: 田中さんが妹に本をくれた, "Mr Tanaka gave my sister a book".
The mistake to avoid is using あげる for things coming to you. 友達が私にあげた sounds as if you're describing yourself from outside.
