やはり・やっぱり

やはり, or casually やっぱり, has two related uses.

As expected, sure enough: something turned out as you thought: やっぱり、雨が降ってきた, "sure enough, it started raining"; やはり彼が犯人だった, "as I suspected, he was the culprit".

After all: you come back to your original choice or feeling after considering others: 赤もいいけど、やっぱり青にします, "red's nice too, but I'll go with blue after all". 自分の家がやっぱり一番落ち着く, "there's no place like home".

It's one of the most frequent words in conversation. Compare まさか, "surely not", which is surprise; やっぱり confirms.

Examples

  • やっぱり、雨あめが降ふってきた。

    Sure enough, it started raining.

  • 赤あかもいいけど、やっぱり青あおにします。

    Red is nice too, but I'll go with blue after all.

  • やはり、彼かれが犯人はんにんだった。

    As I suspected, he was the culprit.

  • 自分じぶんの家いえがやっぱり一番落いちばんおち着つく。

    There's no place like home, after all.

  • 行いかないつもりだったけど、やっぱり行いくことにした。

    I wasn't going to go, but in the end I decided to.
