〜としても

even if, even supposing

としても means "even supposing": 今から出発したとしても、間に合わないだろう, "even if we left now, we probably wouldn't make it".

It's a hypothetical: the speaker imagines a situation, which may or may not be real, and says the result wouldn't change. It follows a plain form, often a past: 宝くじが当たったとしても、仕事は続けます, "even if I won the lottery, I'd keep working".

It pairs naturally with たとえ, "even if": たとえ反対されたとしても.

Compare ても (N4), which is more everyday, and としたら, the positive version: "supposing …, then". としても says "supposing …, it still wouldn't matter".

  • 今いまから出発しゅっぱつしたとしても、間まに合あわないだろう。

    Even if we left now, we probably wouldn't make it.

  • 宝たからくじが当あたったとしても、仕事しごとは続つづけます。

    Even if I won the lottery, I'd keep working.

  • たとえ反対はんたいされたとしても、留学りゅうがくしたい。

    Even if people are against it, I want to study abroad.

  • 本当ほんとうだとしても、信しんじられない。

    Even if it's true, I can't believe it.

  • 失敗しっぱいするとしても、やってみたい。

    Even if I fail, I want to give it a try.
