〜かというと

かというと raises a question and then answers it: なぜ遅れたかというと、電車が止まったからだ, "the reason I was late is that the trains stopped". Literally, "if you ask why…".

With a question word, it sets up an explanation, often ending in からだ. With a yes-or-no question (好きか嫌いか), it sets up a nuanced answer: 好きか嫌いかというと、好きなほうだ, "if you ask whether I like it, I'd say I do".

どちらかというと is a common set phrase: "if anything, on balance".

It's close to といえば, but the か makes it a question being answered. かといえば means the same.

Examples

  • なぜ遅おくれたかというと、電車でんしゃが止とまったからだ。

    The reason I was late is that the trains stopped.

  • どうして日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうしているかというと、アニメが好すきだからだ。

    Why am I studying Japanese? Because I love anime.

  • 好すきか嫌きらいかというと、好すきなほうだ。

    If you ask whether I like it or not, I'd say I like it.

  • 彼かれが優やさしいかというと、そうでもない。

    Is he kind? Not really.

  • どちらかというと、夏なつのほうが好すきです。

    If anything, I prefer summer.
