〜以外

except, other than

以外 means "except" or "other than": 日曜日以外は毎日働いている, "I work every day except Sunday".

It's flexible with particles: 以外は ("apart from"), 以外に ("besides"), and 以外の + noun ("other than"): 日本語以外の言語, "languages other than Japanese".

With a negative, it says "no one/nothing except": 彼以外、誰も知らない, "no one knows except him". This overlaps with しか〜ない (彼しか知らない), which is more common in speech.

On signs, 関係者以外立ち入り禁止 means "staff only", literally "no entry except for those concerned".

Don't confuse it with 意外, pronounced the same way, which means "unexpected": 意外と簡単だった, "it was surprisingly easy".

Examples

  • 日曜日にちようび以外いがいは毎日働まいにちはたらいている。

    I work every day except Sunday.

  • 関係者かんけいしゃ以外いがい、入はいらないでください。

    Staff only beyond this point.

  • 肉にく以外いがいなら、何なんでも食たべられます。

    I can eat anything except meat.

  • 彼かれ以外いがい、誰だれも知しらない。

    No one knows except him.

  • 日本語にほんご以外いがいの言語げんごも勉強べんきょうしたい。

    I want to study languages other than Japanese too.
