わざわざ

going out of one's way, specially

わざわざ + action

わざわざ means doing something that takes extra effort, when it wasn't strictly necessary: わざわざ駅まで迎えに来てくれた, "they went out of their way to meet me at the station".

It's common in thanks: 遠いところを、わざわざありがとうございます, "thank you for coming all this way". It acknowledges the trouble someone went to.

It can also question whether the effort is worth it: わざわざ行かなくても、電話で済む, "there's no need to go specially; a phone call will do".

Don't confuse it with わざと, "on purpose", which is often mischievous. Compare せっかく, which is about not wanting to waste an effort already made.

  • 遠とおいところを、わざわざありがとうございます。

    Thank you for coming all this way.

  • わざわざ駅えきまで迎むかえに来きてくれた。

    They went out of their way to meet me at the station.

  • わざわざ行いかなくても、電話でんわで済すむ。

    There's no need to go specially; a phone call will do.

  • わざわざ買かったのに、使つかわなかった。

    I went out and bought it specially, and then didn't use it.

  • わざわざ私わたしのために作つくってくれたの?

    You made this specially for me?
