ばかりに blames a bad result on one single cause, with a sense of regret: 私が余計なことを言ったばかりに、彼女を怒らせてしまった, "simply because I said something unnecessary, I made her angry".
The feeling is "if only it weren't for that one thing". The second half is always unwelcome: failing, losing out, getting into trouble.
After たい, it means "just because I wanted…", describing going to great lengths: 彼に会いたいばかりに、遠い町まで行った, "I went all the way to a distant town, just because I wanted to see him".
Compare せいで, which blames without the regret, and だけに, which intensifies without blaming.
