あまり says an emotion or state went so far that it caused something unusual, usually unwanted: 緊張のあまり、何も言えなかった, "I was so nervous I couldn't say a thing".

After a noun, it takes の: 心配のあまり, うれしさのあまり. After a verb, the dictionary form: 心配するあまり, 集中するあまり.

あまりの before a noun describes an overwhelming quality: あまりの暑さに、倒れそうになった, "the heat was so intense I nearly collapsed". The に after the noun marks it as the cause.

It's the same あまり as "not very" (あまり〜ない), but here it means "excess". Compare ほど, which states degree more neutrally.

Examples

  • 緊張きんちょうのあまり、何なにも言いえなかった。

    I was so nervous I couldn't say a thing.

  • 心配しんぱいするあまり、眠ねむれなかった。

    I was so worried I couldn't sleep.

  • うれしさのあまり、泣ないてしまった。

    I was so happy I cried.

  • 仕事しごとに集中しゅうちゅうするあまり、食事しょくじを忘わすれた。

    I was so absorbed in work that I forgot to eat.

  • あまりの暑あつさに、倒たおれそうになった。

    The heat was so intense that I nearly collapsed.
