〜ずして

without (doing)

ずして is a literary "without doing": 戦わずして勝つ, "to win without fighting", a famous line from Sun Tzu.

It attaches to the ない-stem: 戦う → 戦わずして, 流す → 流さずして, する → せずして. It usually means achieving something without the expected effort or cost, or it states a condition: 努力せずして、成功はない, "without effort, there's no success".

Set phrases include 労せずして ("effortlessly") and 期せずして ("unexpectedly, by coincidence").

It's a weightier version of ずに (N4). Compare ずとも, "even without", which says the action is unnecessary.

  • 戦たたかわずして勝かつ。

    To win without fighting.

  • 彼かれは労ろうせずして大金たいきんを手てに入いれた。

    He made a fortune without lifting a finger.

  • 期きせずして、二人ふたりは同おなじ答こたえを出だした。

    By coincidence, the two of them came up with the same answer.

  • 努力どりょくせずして、成功せいこうはない。

    Without effort, there's no success.

  • 一滴いってきの血ちも流ながさずして、革命かくめいは成功せいこうした。

    The revolution succeeded without a drop of blood being shed.
