〜としたところで・〜にしたところで

としたところで means "even supposing that", and the second half says it wouldn't help or change anything: 今から急いだとしたところで、間に合わないだろう, "even if we hurried now, we wouldn't make it".

にしたところで after a noun (usually a person) means "even for X, X is no different": 私にしたところで、いい案があるわけではない, "even I don't have a good idea". It spreads a problem to everyone, often defensively.

Both are emphatic versions of としても and にしても (N3), and they're related to たところで (N2), "even if (it's pointless)". The tone is resigned or a little argumentative.

Examples

  • 今いまから急いそいだとしたところで、間まに合あわないだろう。

    Even if we hurried now, we probably wouldn't make it.

  • 私わたしにしたところで、いい案あんがあるわけではない。

    It's not as if I have a good idea either.

  • 彼かれにしたところで、全部分ぜんぶわかっているわけではない。

    Even he doesn't understand all of it.

  • 今いまさら謝あやまったとしたところで、許ゆるしてもらえないだろう。

    Even if I apologised now, they probably wouldn't forgive me.

  • 私一人わたしひとりが反対はんたいしたとしたところで、結果けっかは変かわらない。

    Even if I alone objected, it wouldn't change the result.
