〜に足る・〜に足りない

に足る means "worthy of, sufficient for": 彼は信頼するに足る人物だ, "he's a man worthy of trust". It's formal and usually comes before a noun: 満足するに足る結果, 信じるに足る証拠.

The negative に足りない (or に足らない) means "not worth": 取るに足らない問題, "a trivial problem" (literally "not worth picking up"). 恐れるに足りない means "nothing to fear".

足る is the classical form of 足りる, "to be enough". So the puzzle is to read the sentence's tone: praise takes に足る, and dismissal takes に足りない.

It's close to に値する, "worth, deserve", which is more common with nouns: 称賛に値する.

  • 彼かれは信頼しんらいするに足たる人物じんぶつだ。

    He's a man worthy of trust.

  • そんなのは取とるに足たらない問題もんだいだ。

    That's a trivial problem.

  • 彼かれの話はなしは信しんじるに足たるものだ。

    His story is believable.

  • 残念ざんねんながら、満足まんぞくするに足たる結果けっかは得えられなかった。

    Unfortunately, we didn't get a satisfactory result.

  • あんな相手あいては恐おそれるに足たりない。

    An opponent like that is nothing to fear.
