〜にたえない・〜にたえる

にたえない (に堪えない) has two uses:

  • Too awful to bear, after 見る, 聞く or 読む: 彼の歌は聞くにたえない, "his singing is unbearable to listen to".
  • Overwhelmed with a feeling, in formal speech: 感謝にたえません, "I'm deeply grateful". 遺憾にたえない means "deeply regrettable".

The positive にたえる means "worth, able to stand up to": 大人の鑑賞にたえる作品, "a work that stands up to adult appreciation".

たえる (堪える) means "to endure, withstand". So the puzzle is to read the sentence: praise needs たえる, an awful sight or sound needs たえない, and a formal thank-you needs たえません.
