〜に言わせれば

に言わせれば introduces someone's personal, often strong or unconventional, opinion: 母に言わせれば、私はまだ子どもだそうだ, "if you ask my mother, I'm still a child".

It's literally "if you let X say it", which implies that X has firm views. The ending is usually そうだ, らしい or だ. With 私, it introduces your own frank opinion: 私に言わせれば、それは言い訳にすぎない, "if you ask me, that's just an excuse".

Compare によれば (N3), "according to (a source)", which is neutral and used for facts and reports. に言わせれば is always an opinion.

It's close to にしてみれば (N2), "from X's point of view", which is about someone's feelings rather than their opinion.

  • 母ははに言いわせれば、私わたしはまだ子こどもだそうだ。

    If you ask my mother, I'm still a child.

  • 専門家せんもんかに言いわせれば、この計画けいかくは無謀むぼうらしい。

    According to the experts, this plan is reckless.

  • 彼かれに言いわせると、日本にほんの夏なつは世界一暑せかいいちあついそうだ。

    According to him, Japanese summers are the hottest in the world.

  • 私わたしに言いわせれば、それは言いい訳わけにすぎない。

    If you ask me, that's just an excuse.

  • 祖父そふに言いわせれば、昔むかしの方ほうが良よかったらしい。

    If you ask my grandfather, things were better in the old days.
