With verbs that describe a change (marry, live, open, know), ている describes the state the change left behind, not an action in progress:
- 結婚しています: "is married" (not "is getting married")
- 住んでいます: "lives (somewhere)"
- 窓が開いています: "the window is open"
- 知っています: "knows"
So 結婚しました is the event, "got married", and 結婚しています is the result, "is married".
Wearing things works the same way: 眼鏡をかけています, "wears glasses".
One oddity: the negative of 知っています is 知りません (or 知らない), not 知っていません.
Whether a verb's ている means "in progress" or "state" comes from the verb itself; with practice you stop thinking about it.

姉は結婚しています。
My older sister is married.
今、東京に住んでいます。
I live in Tokyo now.
田中さんの電話番号を知っていますか。
Do you know Mr Tanaka's phone number?
窓が開いていますね。
The window's open, isn't it?
父は眼鏡をかけています。
