Japanese says where something is with a position noun after の: 机の上, "the top of the desk", so "on the desk". Then add に with あります or います: 机の上に本があります, "there's a book on the desk".

The common ones: 上 (on, above), 下 (under), 中 (in, inside), 外 (outside), 前 (in front of), 後ろ (behind), 隣 (next to), 横 (beside).

With an action, use で instead of に: 駅の前で待っています, "I'm waiting in front of the station".

隣 is for things of the same kind side by side (two buildings, two people); 横 is for anything beside something else.

Examples

  • 机つくえの上うえに本ほんがあります。

    There's a book on the desk.

  • 猫ねこはテーブルの下したにいます。

    The cat is under the table.

  • かばんの中なかに財布さいふがあります。

    My wallet is in my bag.

  • 駅えきの前まえで待まっています。

    I'm waiting in front of the station.

  • 銀行ぎんこうはスーパーの隣となりです。

    The bank is next to the supermarket.

  • 木きの後うしろに犬いぬがいます。

    There's a dog behind the tree.
