〜になる・〜くなる

なる means "become", and it attaches to the adverb forms of adjectives:

  • い-adjectives: drop い, add く. 寒い → 寒くなる, "get cold".
  • な-adjectives and nouns: add に. 元気 → 元気になる, "get better"; 医者 → 医者になる, "become a doctor".

Japanese uses なる far more than English uses "become": the seasons change (暖かくなりました), people grow up (大きくなったね), and even the time comes round (八時になりました). Often the natural English is "get" or "turn".

The past なりました is the usual way to report a change: 上手になりました, "you've got good".

  • だんだん寒さむくなりました。

    It's gradually got colder.

  • 日本語にほんごが上手じょうずになりましたね。

    Your Japanese has got really good.

  • 将来しょうらい、医者いしゃになりたいです。

    I want to be a doctor someday.

  • 部屋へやがきれいになりました。

    The room's clean now.

  • もう十時じゅうじになりましたよ。

    It's already ten o'clock.
