な-adjectives behave like nouns: at the end of a sentence they take だ or です (静かです, "it's quiet"), and their negative and past are the noun ones: 静かじゃない, 静かでした.

Before a noun they need な: 静かな町, "a quiet town"; 有名な人, "a famous person". That な is what gives them their name.

Most don't end in い, but a few that do are traps: きれい (pretty, clean), 嫌い (disliked) and 有名 are な-adjectives, so it's きれいな花, not きれい花, and きれいじゃない, not きれくない.

Common ones at N5: 静か, 元気, 有名, 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 下手, 便利, 簡単, 暇, きれい.

  • 静しずかな町まちに住すんでいます。

    I live in a quiet town.

  • あの人ひとは有名ゆうめいな歌手かしゅです。

    That person is a famous singer.

  • きれいな花はなですね。

    What beautiful flowers.

  • これは便利べんりなアプリです。

    This is a handy app.

  • 元気げんきな子こどもたちが走はしっています。

    Lively children are running around.
