へ

へ marks the direction of movement: 東京へ行きます, "go to Tokyo". As a particle it's pronounced e but written へ; on a keyboard, type he.

With 行く, 来る and 帰る, へ and に are usually interchangeable. へ stresses the direction you're heading, に the arrival, so へ suits setting out, and it's the one you'll see on signs and in letters.

Unlike に, へ can be followed by の to describe a noun: 母への手紙, "a letter to my mother".

It can't do に's other jobs: not what you get on (電車に乗る), not a time, not where something is.

Examples

  • 来週らいしゅう、北海道ほっかいどうへ行いきます。

    I'm going to Hokkaido next week.

  • 夏休なつやすみに国くにへ帰かえります。

    I'm going back to my home country for the summer holidays.

  • 日本にほんへようこそ。

    Welcome to Japan!

  • これは母ははへの手紙てがみです。

    This is a letter to my mother.

  • 次つぎの角かどを右みぎへ曲まがってください。

    Please turn right at the next corner.
