ようになる describes a change in what someone does or can do: 日本語の新聞が読めるようになりました, "I've become able to read Japanese newspapers".

With the potential form, it's a new ability: 泳げるようになった, "(the child) can swim now".

With the ordinary dictionary form, it's a new habit: 最近、野菜を食べるようになりました, "I've started eating vegetables lately".

Compare なる with nouns and adjectives (上手になる, 寒くなる). Verbs can't go straight before なる, so ように is the bridge.

For a change to not doing something, the negative is usually なくなる: 見なくなった, "I stopped watching".
