ちっとも〜ない・少しも〜ない

ちっとも with a negative means "not at all": この映画はちっとも面白くない, "this film isn't the least bit interesting".

It's like 全然 (N5), but more emotional and a little childish or complaining in tone. 少しも means the same and is more neutral.

Like めったに, it needs a negative: ちっとも知らなかった, "I had no idea at all"; 雨がちっともやまない, "the rain just won't stop".

Compare あまり〜ない, "not very", which is mild. ちっとも is total, and usually expresses frustration or surprise. Like 全然, it needs a negative, so a positive verb after it is always wrong.

Examples

  • この映画えいがはちっとも面白おもしろくない。

    This film isn't the least bit interesting.

  • 彼かれはちっとも話はなしを聞きいてくれない。

    He doesn't listen to me at all.

  • 雨あめがちっともやまない。

    The rain just won't stop.

  • 何度練習なんどれんしゅうしても、ちっとも上手じょうずにならない。

    However much I practise, I don't get any better at all.

  • ちっとも知しらなかった。

    I had no idea at all.
