〜たるや

たるや turns a noun into a dramatic topic, then describes how extreme it is: その迫力たるや、すさまじいものだった, "talk about impact, it was overwhelming".

It's used for striking qualities: power, beauty, amount of practice, anger, excitement. The second half is an intense evaluation: すさまじい, 言葉では表せない, プロ並み, 想像を超えていた.

It comes from the classical たる (= である) plus や, and it sounds literary and a bit theatrical, perfect for reviews, essays and dramatic narration.

Compare たるもの, which states the duties of a role, and plain は, which just marks a topic without emphasis.

Examples

  • その迫力はくりょくたるや、すさまじいものだった。

    Talk about impact, it was overwhelming.

  • 彼かれの練習量れんしゅうりょうたるや、プロ並なみだ。

    As for how much he practises, it's on a par with a pro.

  • その景色けしきの美うつくしさたるや、言葉ことばでは表あらわせない。

    The beauty of that view is beyond words.

  • 彼女かのじょの怒いかりたるや、想像そうぞうを超こえていた。

    Her anger was beyond anything I'd imagined.

  • 会場かいじょうの熱気ねっきたるや、すごいものだった。

    The excitement in the hall was something else.
