〜に先駆けて

ahead of (others), leading the way

に先駆けて means doing something before anyone else, leading the way: 当社は他社に先駆けて、新製品を発売した, "we launched the new product ahead of our competitors".

The noun is a competitor or a wider group: 他社, 世界, 全国, 日本, or 時代 ("ahead of its time"). The feeling is pride in being a pioneer, so it's common in company announcements and news.

Compare に先立って (N2), "prior to", which is about preparation before an event: 開会に先立って挨拶がある. に先駆けて is about coming first in a race against others.

It also appears in marketing: 一般発売に先駆けて, "ahead of the general release", for early access.
