〜に及んで

に及んで means "when things reached this stage": 警察が来るに及んで、ようやく彼は罪を認めた, "only when the police arrived did he finally confess".

Like に至って, it often introduces a late reaction with ようやく or 初めて. It's also used when a conversation or problem extends to a new area: 話が結婚に及んで、彼は急に黙った, "when the talk turned to marriage, he suddenly went quiet".

The set phrase この期に及んで means "at this late stage" and is always critical: この期に及んで、まだ言い訳をするのか, "you're still making excuses at this late stage?"

及ぶ means "to reach, extend to". Don't confuse it with には及ばない, "there's no need".

  • この期ごに及およんで、まだ言いい訳わけをするのか。

    You're still making excuses at this late stage?

  • 警察けいさつが来くるに及およんで、ようやく彼かれは罪つみを認みとめた。

    Only when the police arrived did he finally confess.

  • 話はなしが結婚けっこんに及およんで、彼かれは急きゅうに黙だまった。

    When the talk turned to marriage, he suddenly went quiet.

  • 被害ひがいが全国ぜんこくに及およんで、政府せいふはやっと動うごいた。

    Only when the damage had spread nationwide did the government act.

  • 事ことここに及およんでは、もう隠かくしようがない。

    Now that it's come to this, there's no way to hide it.
