〜ところ

about to / in the middle of / just did

Dictionary form / ている form / た-form + ところ

ところ means "place", and in time it pins down the exact point you're at. The verb form before it says which point:

  • dictionary form: about to. これから出かけるところです, "I'm just about to head out".
  • ている form: in the middle of. 今、晩ご飯を作っているところです, "I'm in the middle of making dinner".
  • た-form: just finished. ちょうど今、駅に着いたところです, "I've just this moment got to the station".

It's very handy on the phone: 今、家を出るところ, "I'm just leaving".

たところ is "just this moment"; たばかり is "recently, as it feels to me".

Examples

  • これから出でかけるところです。

    I'm just about to head out.

  • 今いま、晩ばんご飯はんを作つくっているところです。

    I'm in the middle of making dinner.

  • ちょうど今いま、駅えきに着ついたところです。

    I've just this moment got to the station.

  • 今いま、家いえを出でるところだから、少すこし待まって。

    I'm just leaving the house, so hang on a bit.

  • ちょうど宿題しゅくだいが終おわったところです。

    I've just finished my homework.
