それで links a cause to what happened as a result: 電車が遅れました。それで、会議に遅刻しました, "the train was late. So I was late for the meeting".

It describes a natural consequence, so it's used for things that already happened or facts. It can't introduce a command, a request or a suggestion: for "so please…", use だから or ですから.

In conversation, それで? means "and then?" or "so what happened?", encouraging someone to go on with their story.

Compare それに ("what's more"), which adds a point, and それから ("and then"), which is about order in time.

Examples

  • 電車でんしゃが遅おくれました。それで、会議かいぎに遅刻ちこくしました。

    The train was late. So I was late for the meeting.

  • 風邪かぜをひきました。それで、学校がっこうを休やすみました。

    I caught a cold. That's why I stayed off school.

  • 「昨日きのう、駅えきで先生せんせいに会あったんだ。」「それで?」

    "I ran into our teacher at the station yesterday." "And then?"

  • 道みちが込こんでいた。それで、タクシーをやめて歩あるいた。

    The roads were jammed, so I gave up on a taxi and walked.

  • お金かねがなかった。それで、旅行りょこうに行いけなかった。

    I didn't have any money, so I couldn't go on the trip.
