こと turns a verb phrase into a noun, like の does: 写真を撮ること, "taking photos". It then takes particles and です like any noun.
こと and の often overlap, but not always:
- before です, only こと works: 趣味は写真を撮ることです, "my hobby is taking photos"
- こと is more abstract and formal: 大切なのは続けることです, "what matters is keeping at it"
- の is more immediate, for things you perceive: 歌っているのが聞こえる
こと also means "the fact that": 結婚したことを知っていますか, "did you know (the fact) that he got married?"
It's the base of many patterns you've met: ことができる, ことがある, ことにする.
Examples
私の趣味は写真を撮ることです。
My hobby is taking photos.
日本語を話すことは難しくない。
Speaking Japanese isn't difficult.
大切なのは毎日続けることです。
What matters is keeping at it every day.
私の夢は世界中を旅行することです。
My dream is to travel all over the world.
田中さんが結婚したことを知っていますか。
Did you know that Tanaka got married?
