〜といったところだ

といったところだ gives a rough, modest estimate, usually on the low side: 参加者は、せいぜい三十人といったところだ, "there'll be thirty participants at most".

It often comes with せいぜい ("at most"), まあまあ, or just a number. The feeling is "that's about it, nothing more". It's also used for self-deprecating assessments: 私の料理の腕は、まあまあといったところだ, "my cooking is so-so, I'd say".

というところだ means the same. It's conversational and very common.

Compare というものだ (N2), "that's what … is", which is a general truth, not an estimate. Keep an eye out for せいぜい earlier in the sentence: it's a strong clue that the answer is といったところだ.

  • 参加者さんかしゃは、せいぜい三十人さんじゅうにんといったところだ。

    There'll be thirty participants at most.

  • 睡眠時間すいみんじかんは、毎日五時間まいにちごじかんといったところだ。

    I get about five hours' sleep a night.

  • 私わたしの料理りょうりの腕うでは、まあまあといったところだ。

    My cooking is so-so, I'd say.

  • 完成かんせいまで、あと一週間いっしゅうかんといったところだ。

    It'll be finished in about another week.

  • 彼かれの日本語にほんごは、日常会話にちじょうかいわができる程度ていどといったところだ。

    His Japanese is about good enough for everyday conversation.
