にして after a noun marks a point, stage or person, often with a sense that it took exactly this to happen:
- An age or attempt: 五十歳にして初めて海外に行った, "he went abroad for the first time at fifty". 三度目にしてようやく合格した, "he finally passed on the third try".
- Only someone like: この技は名人にして初めてできる, "only a master can do this".
- A speed: 一瞬にして, "in an instant".
- A proverb: あの親にしてこの子あり, "like father, like son".
It's a formal, emphatic に. Don't confuse it with にしては (N3), "for (surprisingly)": 五十歳にしては若い, "young for fifty".
Examples
彼は五十歳にして、初めて海外に行った。
He went abroad for the first time at the age of fifty.
この技は名人にして初めてできるものだ。
Only a master can pull off this technique.
あの親にしてこの子あり。
Like father, like son.
三度目にしてようやく合格した。
I finally passed on my third try.
火事で、一瞬にしてすべてを失った。
In the fire, I lost everything in an instant.
