〜あっての

AあってのB means B can only exist because A is there: お客様あっての商売です, "our business exists only thanks to our customers".

A is the essential foundation (customers, health, fans, cooperation, failure), and B is what depends on it. The sentence usually ends with だ or です and states a conviction or a note of gratitude.

It's often used humbly, to credit others: 皆さんの協力あっての成功です, "this success was only possible thanks to your cooperation". It also works as a life lesson: 健康あっての人生だ, "without health, there's no life worth living".

Don't confuse it with あっても, "even if there is", or としての, "as a".

  • 健康けんこうあっての人生じんせいだ。

    Without your health, you have nothing.
